Repeat Prescriptions

You should allow two working days for your request to be processed by us. If you have asked for your prescription to be sent to a chemist then please remember to allow extra time for them to pick it up and get your medication ready for you.

For medico-legal and safety reasons we do not take requests for repeat prescriptions over the telephone. Prescriptions will not normally be available over the counter for new conditions unless you have seen your doctor.

Prescribing of over the counter medicines is changing

Your GP, nurse or pharmacist will not generally give you a prescription for over-the-counter medicines for a range of short-term, minor health concerns. Instead, over the counter medicines are available to buy in a pharmacy or supermarket in your local community.

Many pharmacies are open during evenings and weekends, so they are a convenient place to get health advice instead of waiting for an appointment at the Practice. Almost all pharmacies have a private consultation room. You can find your nearest pharmacy and get advice and information on how to treat a range of common ailments by visiting the NHS website.

GPs, nurses or pharmacists will also generally no longer prescribe probiotics and some vitamins and minerals. You can get these from eating a healthy, varied and balanced diet, or buy them at your pharmacy or supermarket.

In Person

Patients who have a stable condition and who need regular repeat medication will receive a computerised request form attached to their prescription.

Simply tick the items you require and post it to the surgery or place it in the repeat prescription box at reception. If you don’t have a computerised form you must write your request out clearly. Your prescription can be forwarded to a chemist of your choice if you add the chemist’s name to your request.

Nurse Request

If one of our nurses is requesting a prescription for you during an appointment then if you have nominated a pharmacy it will have been sent electronically to them by the end of the day.

Medication Reviews

Patients on repeat medication will be asked to see a doctor, nurse practitioner or practice nurse at least once a year to review these regular medications and notification should appear on your repeat slip.

Please ensure that you book an appropriate appointment to avoid unnecessary delays to further prescriptions.
